The glimpses of the Curricular and Co-curricular initiatives of the college
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In line with the proverb “A SOUND MIND IN A SOUND BODY”, our college gives prominent place to sports and games. Our college Physical Education Resource centre is fully equipped with the following sports facilities for a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities.
Indoor courts: Table tennis, carrom and chess
Outdoor courts: Basket ball, volley ball, badminton, kabadi, kho-kho and 200 m track.
SPORTS CLUB
Sports club is being functioning successfully in our college for promoting the skills in physical activities of students. The club committee consists of Mrs. E. Revathi, Physical Directress, the coordinator and eight student members.
BLOOD DONATION CLUB
Our college focuses on service to the society and hence organized Blood donation club. The objective of this club is to save the lives by making the timely availability of the required blood group in and around Thoothukudi District. It also organizes blood donation camp every year in our college campus. The club committee consists of Dr. T. Uma, Assistant Professor in Biological Science Edcuation, Co-ordinator, all teaching faculty, non teaching staff and students as the members and is functioning successfully.
YOUTH RED CROSS CLUB
Our college Youth Red Cross Club functions well to inspire, encourage, initiate and to involve young people as much as possible in the movement and its all forms of humanitarian activities. The club conducted various activities in and around the campus which focus on to enable the growth and development of a spirit of service and sense of duty with dedication and devotion in the minds of the youth. The Red Cross, Red Crescent and Red Crystal emblems are symbols of Protection in times of armed conflict and their use is enshrined in International Humanitarian Law. Dr. D. Jeyaseelan Selvakumar, Asst. Prof. in Education, is being the co – ordinator of the club.
CITIZEN CONSUMER CLUB
Our college inaugurated the Citizen Consumer Club in the year 2009 to make our students as a rational consumer in the society. The club committee consists of Mr. E. Sundar Ganesh, Assistant Professor in Economics Education, the co–ordinator.
RED RIBBON CLUB
Red Ribbon Club (RRC) is functioning excellently in our college. It envisages instilling charity mind among all the students to extend their able help towards developing healthy life styles, donating blood to all the needy by promotion of regular voluntary blood donation and other activities. The club committee consists of Mr. P. Pratheep Raja, Assistant Professor in Education, the co-ordinator and students’ as the members.
ENVIRO – CLUB
Our college organized Enviro – club, a student motivated club with the goal of improving awareness on both local and global environment issues on the campus and in the community. Our club aimed to do this through discussion, interaction with other environmentally motivated individuals or groups and experiments that allow for students to learn, interact and observe the changing world around us. Mr. D. Sivasubramanian, Assistant Professor in Commerce Education, is being the co – ordinator of the Enviro – club.
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Our college organizes Alumni Association Meeting every year in the 2nd October to promote the general welfare of the institution, to present the old students as role models to the current students and to offer practical support to the current students as they start their careers. Mr. E. Alwin, Assistant Professor in Mathematics and Dr. T. Uma, Assistant Professor in Biological Science are being the co–ordinators of the Alumni Association.
PARENT– TEACHER ASSOCIATION
The college organizes Parent – Teachers meeting every year to establish a cordial relationship between teachers and parents and thus facilitates the academic progress of our students. Dr. T. Uma, Assistant Professor in Education and Mr. D. Sivasubramanian, Assistant Professor in Commerce Education, are being the co-ordinators of the PT association.
VIDEO GRAPHED MICRO TEACHING SKILL PRACTICE
Our college conducts Micro – teaching skill practice for student – teachers by our faculty members every year. It is a pre – teaching practice conducted for improving the student’s competency in teaching before they take actual classes. The trainees teach the micro lessons using varied skills viz. Skill of Stimulus variation, Skill of Explaining, Skill of Reinforcement, Skill of Probing questioning, and skill of using the Black board and were observed by the peer trainees. The micro teaching skill practice would be video graphed and thus paves way to enhance the student – teachers’ skills in teaching. Mr. E. Sundar Ganesh, Assistant Professor in Economics Education is being the co – ordinator of Videographed Micro-teaching skill practice.
INTERNSHIP PRACTICE IN CO-OPERATING SCHOOLS
The college organizes School Internship Practice to our B. Ed II – Year students every year in order to impart and to enhance quality pedagogical practices as per the direction given by the National Council for Teacher Education and Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, Chennai. During the 16 – week internship in schools, they involve themselves in multi – task oriented activities like observation of classes, preparation of lesson plans, handling classes, preparation of instructional resources, art and crafts activities, drawing etc. from standard 6th to 12th. The student – teachers will undergo internship in different schools at Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli Districts. The teacher educators monitor the student – teachers’ performance during the internship practice periodically. Dr. H. Gayathri, Assistant Professor in Physical Science Education and Mr. E. Sundar Ganesh, Assistant Professor in Economics Education are being the co-ordinators of the school Internship practice.
COMMUNITY BASED ENGAGEMENT / SKILL DEVELOPMENT CAMP
As per the guidelines given by Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, our college organizes Community Based Engagement / Skill Development Camp in our campus for a period of one week to impart skill training such as leadership training, fire and safety management, disaster management, health education, mental health and hygiene, traffic rules and regulation etc., to our student – teachers in order to make them fit to be ideal citizens of our country. The camp committee consists of Mrs. E. Revathi, Physical Directress, Camp Director, Mr. K. Natarajan, Art & Craft instructor, Camp Officer and experts from various fields.
VIVEKANANDA THOUGHT
Our college encourages the students to attend the classes in “Vivekananda Thought” every year leading to certificate course conducted by Vivekananda Kendra, Thoothukudi. Test on the philosophical thoughts of Swami Vivekananda was also conducted and the successful candidates were awarded merit certificate by Vivekananda Kendra. Dr. T. Uma, Assistant Professor is being the faculty in-charge of the programme.
ANTI RAGGING COMMITTEE
Anti – ragging committee of our college functions for the purpose of providing safe and conducive environment to the students. Dr. A.D. Vasanthy Vinoliya, Assistant Professor in Education is being the co-ordinator of the programme.
ARTS AND CRAFT TRAINING
The college imparts Arts and craft training to our students. Kinesthetic components of students are nurtured in Arts and Craft resource centre such as training on preparation of instructional materials for teaching and learning, glass painting and pot painting, hand works of embroidery, toy making, making socially useful products from waste materials and leisure time activities of training in making of candles, washing powder and phenol etc., related to the course content. Mr. K. Natarajan, Arts and Craft instructor is being the in- charge of the training programme.
MUSIC AND DANCE TRAINING
The music room in our college is furnished with a variety of instruments like Tabla, Drums, Harmonium, Guitar, Violin, and Keyboard etc. to equip the students with skills of better coordination of different musical instruments and academic related activities as per the norms of the NCTE. Mrs. K. Sujavati, Music Instructor is being the in-charge of the training programme.
National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a special program to youth sponsored by the Government of India throughout the nation. The scheme was started in our college in 1989. At present units are doing various services to nearby villages. Students may join in these activities.
